The Special Theory of Relativity was formulated based on a few assumtions, in particular, the speed of light is constant irrespective of the speed of the observer.
Experimental proof of the Theory has been carried out by physicists over the world since its publication in year 1905. For example, time dilation, which is the running of a clock becomes slow when its speed increases, has been proved by several experiments and observations (e.g. by observing short-live muons in the atmosphere). The famous mass-energy equivalence formula E = mc^2, which is a supplement to the Special Theory of Relativity, is also proved in calculating energy released in nuclear fission and fusion in atomic bombs or in nuclear power generation.

Regarding General Relativity (published in 1925), several famous experiments were performed. These include the precession of the orbit of planet Meercury, which cannot be explained by Newtonian mechanics, but was calculated accuracte by General Relativity.
