1.The distance between two features on the ground is 5 km. If these two features are apart on a map for 3.5cm, what is the approximate scale of the map?

2. The length of a bridge on a map with the scale of 1:2,500,000 is 0.5 cm. What is the actual length of this bridge on the ground?

1. Approximate scale of the map

= 3.5 cm : 5 km

= 3.5 cm / 3.5 : 5 km / 3.5

= 1 cm : 1.42857 km

= 1 cm : 1428.57 m

= 1 cm : 142857 cm

= 1:142857

2. Actual length of this bridge on the ground = 0.5 cm X 2500000

= 1250000 cm

= 12500 m

= 12.5 km
