Girl (Cosette) becomes like his daughter and she is all he has. Girl falls in love with law student who is involved in civil uprising. Valjean saves love interest even though it will mean losing Cosette. Saves obsessed detective (Javert) instead of killing him, too. Javert then kills himself.
Opinion︰The ending is very long and sad, Valjean basically barely sees Cosette until he is on his deathbed. A very good book, I highly recommend it.

Summary︰A mermaid who falls in love with a human prince sells her tongue to the Sea Witch in exchange for legs. She will only get a soul when the prince loves her and marries her. When she goes on land, the prince falls for her. His father asks him to marry the princess from a nearby country, but he tells the mermaid he cannot because he doesn't love the princess. He also told her that he fell in love with a girl from the temple he believes saved him from drowning (the temple was where the mermaid dropped him off), but he loves the mermaid more. He found out that the girl from the temple was the princess so they got married which breaks the mermaid's heart. One day, her hairless sisters appeared to her and told her that if she kills the prince and let the blood drip onto her feet, she will be a mermaid again. She couldn't bring herself up to kill him so she just jumped into the ocean and becomes sea foam, but instead of ceasing to exist she becomes one of the daughters of the air.
