A balloon of volume 2000 m3 is filled with hot air of density 0.95 kg/m3, If the mass of the fabric and basket is 200 kg and that of the pilot is 75 kg, what is the maximum load that can be carried when operating in air of density 1.25 kg/m3?

Volume of air displaced by the balloon = 2000 m^3

Upthrust on the balloon = weight of air displaced = 2000 x 1.25g N = 25000 N

where g is the acceleration due to gravity, taken to be 10 m/s^2

Weight of hot air inside balloon

= 2000 x 0.95g N = 19000 N

Hence, total weight of balloon, basket and pilot

= (19000 + 200g + 75g) N

= 21750 N

Net lifting force = (25000 - 21750) N = 3250 N

Therefore, the maximum load that can be carried = 3250 N
