Buyout a contract sometimes appear in NBA.
For example, New York wants to buyout the contract of Eddie Curry. It means both sides would negotiate for an acceptable amount ( usually less than his annual salary ) that it serves as an compensation fee to release the player. In such a case,
1) the player earns less but he has a chance to join another team using Veteran's minimum for more playing time or even a strive for playoff spot,
2) the team can pay less and at the same time, it has one spot spared out to sign another more useful player.
