    1. argon, 0.97% of air.

    others are minimal.

    2. no. compound can be defined as "substances that can be chemically broken down". both argon and nitrogen cannot be chemically broken down, so they're not compounds.

    another definition of compound is "a substance that not every atoms in it have same number of protons". in carbon dioxide, there're some atoms having 6 protons in each of them (carbon), while some have 8 (oxygen). thus carbon dioxide is a compound.

    in argon, every atom has 18 protons in its nucleus, so argon is not a compound.

    in nitrogen, every atom has 7 protons in its nucleus, so nitrogen is not a compound.
