It will be easier for you to understand by giving some examples than to explain it.

    1.Remember +-ing

    Remember + infinitive

    (i) I remembered going to work. (I remembered the action of previously going to work.)

(ii) I remembered to go to work. (I remembered that I needed to go to work, and so I did.)

    2.Stop +-ing

    Stop + infinitive

    (i) I stop going to school. ( I still learning or studying but not in school.)

(ii) I stop to go to school. ( I stop learning or studying. )

    3.try +-ing

    try + infinitive

(note: For try When a to-infinitive is used, it means the subject makes an effort at; attempt or endeavor to do something. If a gerund is used, it means the subject attempts to do something in testing to see what might happen.)

    (i) I have tried being stern, but to no avail.

(ii) Please try to remember to post my letter

    4.forget +ing

    forget +infinitive

    (i) She forgot telling me our plans. (She told me, but then forgot having done so.)

(ii) She forgot to tell me our plans. (She did not tell me, though she should have.)

    5.go on +ing

    go on +infinitive

    (i) He went on giggling, not having noticed the teacher enter. (He continued doing so.)

(ii) After winning the semi-finals, he went on to play in the finals. (He completed the semi-finals, then later played in the finals.)

    6.Regret +ing

    Regret + infinitive

    (i) I very much regret saying what I said. (I wish I hadn't said that.)

(ii) We regret to inform you that you have failed your exam. (a polite or formal form of apology.)

    7.See/watch/hear +ing

    See/watch/hear + infinitive

See/watch/hear are normally followed by a gerund.

    hope this can help you.........................
