They seldom have their own choices, they parents choose for them. When they are a lot of violinist, there is a need for cellist in the school band, then their children will get a greater chance to enter that school.
Most kids do not concentrate on timbre nor pitch, they are only admiring their classmates or friends or relatives, and they will yell to learn. In foreign countries, if kids are given a chance to choose, they will get the cello simply because it has a larger size.
In fact, all strings instruments share identical core skills, but different additional skills. Meaningless? Indeed.
In the past, only violinists can be popular soloists, not for their more advanced skills, but more scores for violin and the popularity of their instruments.
Violins are commonly used because they are most expressive, since it has a high register, (human ears are more sensitive to higher pitches); the skills are most various to satisfy different scores and composers, and the requirements are much higher due to its high pitches.
To me, violas are the most troublesome because the viola usually has to deal with the most complicated rhythms in an ensemble.
There are additional skills like thump fingering for the cello, and you need body movement to enhance your bowing.
It is an illusion, and also a tradition. Owing to the all-round performance and least restriction of sounding, the strings family is mostly used by composers. Moreover, the first violinist is the only person who can stand with the conductor.
It is a privilege for the violinists, not because the others are worse. Every part in an orchestra has its own function.資料來源： I studied strings.
