I came to the US from Hong Kong with a K-1 visa two and half year ago. And I strongly recommend you to get a K-1 visa instead.

I list the pros and cons below for your consideration. I think it is better to be SAFE than sorry.

    Notes:

1.) You fiance doe NOT need to be in the K-1 visa interview.

2.) Once you are married, you can submit I-485 and apply for EAD(Employment Authorization Card). After the USCIS send you the receipt, you can apply for driver's license, social security card and even leave the US (not recommended).

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    K1-visa:

    Pros:

1.) Totally legal. (We do everything ourselves, so no attorney is needed)

2.) You may not need a green card interview to get your green card. (I got mine without an interview)

3.) You do NOT need to worry about the immigration officer deny your Status Adjustment(I-485) because you have declared your true intention - getting married in the US.

4.) You can get married right away.

6.) It usually takes about 5 years until you get your US citizenship.

    Cons:

1.) It usually takes 5-6 months until you can arrive in the US.

2.) Extra costs: I-129F (US$170), medical exam (~HK$1200), Certificate of No Criminal Record (~HK$260)

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Travel visa:

    Pros:

1.) You can come to the US and see your fiance right away.

    Cons:

1.) You have to wait months in the US until you can get married (in order to explain you have changed your mind and get married).

2.) You take the risk to be denied when applying for I-485.

3.) Extra costs: If you did not have a medical exam, you will need one in the US (~US$130), fine (US$1000, I am not sure about the amount neither), plus attorney fees(US$1000+) if you need an attorney to work on your case.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You may contact me for more K-1 visa information. Good luck!

    yes, We did.

My wife use 觀光簽證 come to see me, she stay 6 month until last day have to leave, we went to marry. because I was only green-card. so she go to school. we didn't apply her until 18 month later until I become US citizen. After I turn in the form. Paid fine ($1000? forgot!). she can have permit to go to work even can go back to HK for visit. wait another 2 years for interview. she got her G-card. we were easy for interview because she already carry a baby at that time. US Govt have too proof your marry isn't real to reject you or give you a hard time. My wife just become citizen after 3 yeas holding G-card.

She use 7 years to have her US passport.

    more question?

I agree most of puiyeechan said. But K-1 is for citizen, for the PR like me, we have no choice. also K-1 isn't 100% guarantee approval. if you got reject, you can't go back to apply travel visa.

    1. 是事實, 你可以咁做.

    2. 但我唔建議你咁做, 就為咗居留權而咁做, 值得咩? 外國真係咁好咩? 你不如先在外國玩一玩, 睇清楚個liftstyle先啦. 真心講的!
