Below is a model of modern style orchestra seating plan. First and second violins are placed on the left hand side of stage. Cellos are placed in front of right hand side of stage. All strings are placed at the front line on the stage because string section is the most important section in Western Classcial music.
Below is an actual seating plan of a real concert of the above layout.
Below photo shows the traditional European orchestra sitting layout. The differences are the first violins still at left hand side but the second violins are placed at right hand side of stage. Violas just sitting behind the first violins and cellos are placed in the middle and face to conductor. Woodwind, brass and percussion sections are same as above layout. Berlin Philharmonic and Vienna Philharmonic are always using this layout.
Below is a rare case about a Russian Orchestra seating plan. All violinst are placed in front of stage. The celliests and bassists are placed at the left hand side rather than the common situation - right hand side. Some Russian conductors may request this seating plan.
In conclusion, the orchestra sitting plan depended on the acoustic characteristic of concert halls, the habit of conductors, and the style of orchestra. No universal seating plan is applied.
